Yea it’s a rainy Saturday night and I just watched all 8 parts of this 1989 TBS special on Voyager leaving Neptune’s orbit featuring Carl Sagan and Sidney Poitier (wearing the best leopard print tie might I add). If you aren’t a huge nerd, you might want to skip the beginning and just watch parts 6, 7, and 8 instead. Part 6 Carl talks about the golden record, 7 he gives a speech, and 8 Chuck Berry comes out of nowhere and starts playing “Johnny B. Goode”.

Voyager: Rendezvous with Neptune, 1989 TV Special

Parts: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8

When I heard Carl Sagan threw a “party” at JPL for the end of Voyager’s Planetary Grand Tour, I didn’t know it was such a huge shindig.  With TV coverage.  They don’t cover space exploration - or its celebration - like this anymore, as far as I know.

Well done, Carl and The Planetary Society.

Fuuuuuck we used to treat the space program like the Oscars. WHA HAPPENED, AMERICA?
