BMW Films Presents The Hire: Beat The Devil
Directed by Tony Scott
2002

Possibly my favorite of all the BMW Films series. Back then you can sign up on their website to receive the DVD for free, not sure if you can do that still. Anyways, it’s shot by Tony Scott (color grading, jumpcuts, freezeframes, explosions, you know) starring Clive Owen, Gary Oldman, Danny Trejo, a Marilyn Manson cameo, plus James Brown aka The Godfather of Soul aka The Hardest Working Man In Showbusiness aka James Fucking Brown. I mean this isn’t even Halloween related but Marilyn Manson and Gary Oldman playing the devil is close enough, no?

Gary Oldman and Tim Roth
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

1990

Guildenstern: Whose serve?
Rosencrantz: Err…
Guildenstern: Hesitation! Love-one.
Rosencrantz: Whose go?
Guildenstern: Why?
Rosencrantz: Why not?
Guildenstern: What for?
Rosencrantz: Foul! No synonyms! One-all.
Guildenstern: What in God’s name is going on?
Rosencrantz: Foul! No rhetoric! Two-one.
Guildenstern: What does it all add up to?
Rosencrantz: Can’t you guess?
Guildenstern: Were you addressing me?
Rosencrantz: Is there anyone else?
Guildenstern: Who?
Rosencrantz: How would I know?
Guildenstern: Why do you ask?
Rosencrantz: Are you serious?
Guildenstern: Was that rhetoric?
Rosencrantz: No.
Guildenstern: Statement! Two-all. Game point.

Gary Oldman and Tim Roth
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
1990

I’m still waiting for Gary Oldman’s Scent of a Woman Oscar moment in which the Academy finally gives this man the cred he deserves for being I dunno, possibly the best actor working in the biz today. But hey, let’s overlook the man’s entire catalogue of brilliant character acting and nominate him for an Emmy for his guest appearance on fucking Friends.

Btw this movie is amazing if not only for Richard Dreyfuss’s lack of an English accent and Gary Oldman inventing the hamburger, but for Tim Roth and Gary Oldman’s “questions tennis” match and all the little existentialism jokes.

I won’t do it this week, but for sure there needs to be a Gary Oldman week on this blog.
