The Last Hand
by DJ SOLO
I know what I want for Christmas! $10 gets you an 18”x24” print of this amazing piece, which only gets better per the artist’s description:
The 7 Deadly Sins
Each of the characters and one of the paintings, are representations of the 7 deadly sins.
Lust - The painting on the left wall is of Bathsheba, who was the mistress and temptress of King David, with whom he cheated on his wife and directly disobeyed God.
Gluttony - Biggie symbolizes gluttony, being overweight and someone who overindulged in the “good life”.
Sloth - One of the lesser known sins, a sloth does nothing at all. John Lennon was a well known pacifist, and in the painting he is sitting idly, hands intertwined, not even playing cards, drinking, or smoking.
Greed - Michael Jackson has obviously been winning the hands, and we see him here grabbing for the chips.
Pride - Tupac is throwing up the “W” and claiming his pride for the West Coast.
Envy - Jesus is amazed at Michael’s royal flush, and so jealous that he was willing to cheat. If you look below the table, Jesus has the Ace of Spades between his toes.
Wrath - Elvis is the symbol of wrath which is revealed when a mirror image of the picture is projected onto itself (shown in #8). The look in his eyes is also one of a glazed, murderous, stare, and as he is the 7th sin, he drinks a bottle of Jack Daniels with an “Old No. 7” logo on it (shown in #4).
The monkey is not one of the sins because he is not human, however the fact that there is a monkey in “Heaven” is a tip of the hat to Darwin.
As if that wasn’t enough, in true Da Vinci fashion, there’s even more sub-context and hidden meanings which the artist explains HERE. I only wish this was a real oil painting then it would be the most epic thing ever.
