Chloe Sevigny & Lou Reed at a Knicks game. Lou looks pretty bummed out. You think he misses Nate Robinson?

Is it me or does Lou Reed share a striking resemblance to that one drawing of Merlin Mann?

SXSW Carniville - March 18th, 19th, 20th (RSVP HERE)

Seriously GZA, Major Lazer, Diplo, The Walkmen, Dam-Funk, and Best Coast all on the same lineup??? Finally there’s a festival fit for my bi-polar tastes in music! Jeez can’t wait for SXSW. Who’s going?

OK enough about the Oscars, there are much bigger and better things to be concerned about.

the greatest thing about this show is these two’s nascent love affair.

Did you know Aubrey Plaza is on Tumblr? Definitely not stalking her or anything…

From Stones Throw:

A documentary film has been made about the Kashmere Stage Band and their legendary band leader Conrad “Prof” Johnson. The film Thunder Soul is directed by Mark Landsman, and will premiere at SXSW in Austin TX, March 13.

Thunder Soul follows the extraordinary reunion of alumni from Houston’s storied Kashmere High School Stage Band, who return to their school for the first time in 35 years to pay tribute to their beloved leader - the 92 year-old “Prof” - who transformed the school’s mediocre jazz band into a world-class funk powerhouse in the late 60s and early 70s. Conrad Johnson passed away in 2008, only a few days after this reunion.

Mr. Landsman will be present at the premiere of Thunder Soul along with 30 original members of KSB who are featured in the film. After the film’s March 15 showing, The Kashmere Stage Band will perform at the Austin Chronicle Film Party.

Premiere and event dates:

MAR. 13, 11:00 AM Thunder Soul (World premiere) at Paramount Theater, 713 Congress Ave.

MAR. 15, 6:45 PM Thunder Soul at Alamo Lamar 2, 1120 South Lamar Blvd.

MAR. 15, 9:00 PM Kashmere Stage Band (Live) at Austin Chronicle Film Party at La Zona Rosa, 612 W 4th St.

MAR. 19, 2:30 PM Thunder Soul at Paramount Theater, 713 Congress Ave.

So besides the already epic soul lineup featuring Smokey Robinson, I guess this is also happening at SXSW. UGH SO MUCH TO PROCESS.

Singer, song-writer, musician, writer - and latterly, photographer Lou Reed is 68 years old today!

LINGER ON, DARK BLACK OAKLEYS. Sidenote: when did Lou Reed start dressing like a Spider-Man villain???

AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa Box Set

Consisting of 25 of his films plus a hardcover illustrated book with photos, Criterion has put together this epic linen-bound box set celebrating Kurosawa’s 100th birthday.

Includes:

  • Sanshiro Sugata (1943)
  • The Most Beautiful (1944)
  • Sanshiro Sugata Part Two (1945)
  • The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail (1945)
  • No Regrets for Our Youth (1946)
  • One Wonderful Sunday (1947)
  • Drunken Angel (1948)
  • Stray Dog (1949)
  • Scandal (1950)
  • Rashomon (1950)
  • The Idiot (1951)
  • Ikiru (1952)
  • Seven Samurai (1954)
  • I Live in Fear (1955)
  • Throne of Blood (1957)
  • The Lower Depths (1957)
  • The Hidden Fortress (1958)
  • The Bad Sleep Well (1960)
  • Yojimbo (1961)
  • Sanjuro (1962)
  • High and Low (1963)
  • Red Beard (1965)
  • Dodes’ka-den (1970)
  • Kagemusha (1980)
  • Madadayo (1993)

I wish I could say I’ve seen more Kurosawa films. I’ve probably seen about 10 of these, and those are mostly his collabs with Toshiro Mifune. Love the packaging and everything as usual, but the majority of these films can be checked out at the public library or on netflix so I’ll save myself the $300 and do just that. Epic collection, nonetheless.
